James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” NIV
It was about ten or so years ago that we remember a meeting in Cooktown with the local pastors where we stood on a block of land and prayed that God would give them a Christian school. At the time we were thinking a demountable or two and thirty or so kids would be great.
You can imagine how overwhelmed with emotion we were to now see that prayer in the flesh. God has indeed given Cooktown a Christian School. It is a beautiful oasis set amongst the mountains and rocks in a bush setting. About 130 students from prep to year 11, and growing to year 12 in 2018. This school has everything!! A home economics room, a science lab, art room, woodwork shop, kiln, modern air-conditioned class rooms and computers. But above this impressive list it is a school with Jesus at the Centre and passionate staff who feel called to this work and to impart to the students.
We met Amanda at church on Sunday. She is the head of primary school and gave up her afternoon to give us the tour. Then we were invited to speak on an all school assembly and also for Dave to share the word at the staff devotion. Peter the principal made us feel most welcome along with Julie in the office, Amanda and the other staff. A highlight was the gift of a couple of mugs from the school – we will treasure these.
What a fantastic testament of the power of prayer from a faithful few in the early days, and how much God loves Cooktown to give them such a gift.
